Pectin Market Size, Share, Growth (2023-2028)

Pectin Market size was estimated to be worth USD 1.35 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 7.10 % over the next five years to reach a value of USD 1.9 billion by 2028.

Pectin Market Overview:

Pectin is a plant-derived soluble fibre compound found in the cell walls of crops. It is primarily obtained from citrus fruit, apples, apricots, cherries, oranges and carrots. However, the primary raw material used for the manufacturing of the industrial product is apple and dried citrus peel, which is commercially accessible in white and light brown powder. Industrial pectin products are extracted from natural plant raw materials, such as apple pomace and citrus fruits at low pH with the use of mineral acid to reduce acid formation. The remaining fruits of the food industry are dried and refined in powder with a partial amount of sugar and dextrose supplements to achieve texture functionality. Liquid pectin is often sold commercially due to its rapid thickening property.

Recent Developments in Pectin Market:

  1. Compañia Española de Algas Marinas (CEAMSA) and Palmer Holland (US) formed a commercial partnership for the delivery of hydrocolloids such as pectin, carrageenan, fibre, alginate, and modified locust bean gum on the US market.

  2. the DowDupont Nutrition and Health Division introduced the new GRINDSTED Pectin Prime 541 spread with reduced sugar content. It is designed to increase flexibility and has a better heat tolerance and can work on a variety of fruit types and sugar levels.

  3.  Brenntag North America Inc. (US), part of the Brenntag Group, cooperated with Silvateam S.P.A. to distribute its pectin in the United States and Canada. This would assist the firm to expand its presence and encourage its pectin specialty in the North American region.

  4. Dow DuPont Specialty Products Division merged the Nutrition & Health and Industrial Biosciences division into DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences business unit. Both these company divisions are renowned for their innovations and their solid scientific strategy. This merger would accelerate development and innovation that would provide clients across sectors with healthy, secure, innovative and viable alternatives.

Pectin Market Drivers and Restraints:

Growth in the food and beverage industry due to growth in exports and increased parity in consumer purchases boosted sales, boosting the use of products for manufacturing applications of food products. Pectin supports the production of food products as a gelling agent, thickener and stabilizer, which should accelerate the growth of the pectin market.Rapid technological development has led to the use of pectin polymers as edible coatings or films. These coatings usually act as natural barriers against lipids, gases, moisture and volatiles present between food and the environment, which is supposed to drive demand for products. The FDA has generally recognized it as recognized as safe (GRAS) and has authorized its use in non-standardized food products. The rapid technological progress and the emphasis placed on the use of pectin as an edible film have made it an economical alternative to plastics in food packaging. Edible films obstruct the regular flow of oxygen, external aromas and moisture in packaged foods, protect and act as carriers of functional ingredients such as antioxidants and antimicrobials.

The raw materials segment includes apples, citrus, sugar beets and others. Citrus fruits are the most widely adopted source of pectin production in industries, as these fruits contain active phytochemicals and act as an abundant source of vitamin C, folic acid, and potassium that protect against disease. Citrus fruits have a high degree of esterification and exhibit gelling characteristics at high temperatures and form elastic textures such as apple pomace. However, the citrus industry is experiencing inadequate supply due to its lack of availability and rising prices. The cost of raw materials for the manufacture of pectin has increased due to higher processing costs and citrus prices. Estimates have been hampered due to adverse weather conditions and the spread of "citrus" disease. The adoption of alternative sources of raw materials, such as apple pomace, sunflower head, mango pie, soybean peel, passion fruit peel and sugar beet pulp should keep the size of industry revenue in the next decade.

Pectin Market Regional Analysis:

  • North America (US and Canada)

  • Europe (U.K., France, Germany and Rest of Europe)

  • Asia Pacific (Japan, China, India and Rest of APAC)

  • Latin America (Brazil, Mexico and Rest of Latin America)

  • Middle-East & Africa (GCC and Rest of MEA)

Asia-Pacific is anticipated to experience the highest growth rate in terms of market revenue. The strong demand and availability of raw materials in countries such as China and India should benefit the region's market. The supply of primary raw materials such as citrus, apple pomace and other materials is currently limited. In the first quarter of 2016, there was an estimated shortage of over 400 to 500 metric tons in North America alone.

The global lack of production and supply is suspected to increase the cost of the product. In addition, several pectin producers worldwide have also proposed a 30% price increase in the following years. In the last two or three years, imports from Brazil have increased considerably. The country is the largest producer of pectin, followed by Denmark and Mexico. Argentina is also one of the central producing countries of citrus raw materials. However, unfavorable weather conditions and lower demand for lime in the country have led to a decrease in lime plantations.
