Europe Proteases Market was worth USD 410 million in 2016 and estimated to be growing at a CAGR of 5.65%, to reach USD 540 million by 2021. Proteases are any enzymes which perform proteolysis; protein catabolism via hydrolysis of peptide bonds. Proteases have undergone multiple evolutions, and various classes of protease can execute the same reaction by totally different catalytic mechanisms. Proteases are found in Plantae, Fungi, Animalia, Bacteria, Archaea and viruses.

There are various types of proteases that are different on their source type, a few of which include papain, ficain, asclepian, clostripain etc. The protease mechanisms include metalloproteases, glutamic acid proteases, serine proteases, cysteine proteases etc. Generally, proteases from bacterial and fungal sources are changed genetically by transfer of a few genes or by deletion to enhance their performance. Hence, genetically modified proteases result in increased catalytic stability, activities, modified pH and temperature levels. Proteases are used in food applications. In dairy it helps in coagulation of milk, flavour modification while in a bakery it intensifies gluten development. Other applications in food include animal protein processing, seafood processing, in yeast hydrolysis, etc.

The Europe Proteases market is driven by factors like growth of food and detergent industries, rising demand for cleaning formulation drives, growing applications in the pharmaceuticals sector and its ability to reduce production costs in food industry. However, the market is constrained by factors like presence of stringent regulations.

The Europe Proteases market is divided on the basis of source into microbial, plant and animal segments. By application the market is divided into food & beverages, laundry & dish washing detergents, feed additives,  health care, and other applications. Food and beverages segment has the largest share in the segment. By product, the market is categorised into microbial, plant and animal. Renin, Alkaline, Papain proteases have the largest share in the animal, microbial and plant product segments, respectively.

The Europe Proteases market is divided based on geography into United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany and Spain. Europe has the second largest market for proteases in the world, followed by North America region. Factors such as growing applications in pharmaceuticals sector and its potential for cost reduction is expected to drive the market growth in the region.

Some of the major players in the market include Amano Enzyme Inc., Advanced Enzyme Technologies Ltd., Biocatalysts Limited, Associated British Foods PLC and Chr. Hansen Holdings A/S.
