Global Sizing and Thickening Agents Market Size

The global sizing and thickening agents market size was valued at USD 19.62 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach USD 32.43 billion by 2034 from USD 20.75 billion in 2026, growing at a CAGR of 5.74%.

Sizing agent is an element commonly applied to fibers to include the desired qualities. Sizing agents are generally used to reduce fiber porosity to make them suitable for printing. These chemical products increase the resistance properties of the fibers to the penetration of water or other liquid. Sizing agents can be broadly classified into surface sizing agents and internal sizing agents. Some of the most common internal sizing agents are Alkyl succinic anhydride (ASA), rosin, and alkyl ketene dimer (AKD). In contrast, styrene-maleic anhydride (SMA), styrene-acrylic acid, styrene-acrylic emulsion (SAE), gelatin, polyurethane (PUR) and ethylene acrylic acid (EAA), is the most widespread surface sizing agents.

These sizing agents are also classified into natural and synthetic products, depending on the raw materials used in their manufacture. Sizing agents are used primarily in the textile and paper industries. The fiber is treated with sizing agents during paper manufacturing, which improves the ink holding capacity, thus increasing the printing capacity of the paper. In addition, sizing agents improve the quality of the yarns used in the textile industry, preventing fiber breakage.

MARKET DRIVERS AND RESTRAINTS

The increased consumption of tasty, healthy and tasty nutritious food products among consumers has led to a growing interest in the origin of the ingredients used to produce these products. Consumers prefer natural, clean thickeners and components because they are continually looking for "natural" nutrition and products that incorporate an inherently natural, fresh, healthy, and balanced diet.

Starch and its derivatives make up the majority of the Sizing and Thickening Agents used in the textile industry worldwide. They may continue to be the predominant ingredient in most types of sizes. Starch can come from renewable resources like corn and potatoes. Due to high availability and cheaper raw materials, starch sizing agents are most often used for industrial purposes. The paper industry consumes most of the modified starches. The limited supply of raw materials for natural agents encourages consumers to switch to the use of artificial sizing agents. These are prepared using a combination of chemicals, and it can also be applied in conjunction with natural agents. Sizing and Thickening Agents are often used as gelling agents in various products like jams and jellies. Moreover, these agents are used as additives inks, paints, cosmetics, and personal hygiene products. In cosmetics and personal hygiene, Sizing and Thickening Agents act as a stabilizer for an emulsion.

  • Latin America
  • The Middle East and Africa

Among all the regions, Asia Pacific has a significant market share and is supposed to be the fastest-growing market with an encouraging annual compound rate during the forecast period. Rapid growth in industries and urbanization are driving the growth of sizing and thickening agents in developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, favorable government regulations in the area have attracted many industry players to enter the lucrative market, which in turn is driving the market growth. Also, the presence of most populated countries, such as India and China, has increased the usage of paints and coatings in the sectors like construction and automotive, further contributing to the market boom. China, India and Japan are among the largest consumers of these sizing and thickening agents in this region.

Another dominant area in the sizing and thickening agent market is North America. Industries developed for end-users, such as construction, transportation, and electronics, among others, are driving market growth considerably. In addition, the newly elected government has led to a new wave of investment in the development and renovation of infrastructure in both residential and commercial segments, which is anticipated to stimulate demand for significant, thickening agents in the construction sector. Besides, the growth of the workforce has increased the demand for processed products and ready meals. This should have a positive impact on the overall growth of the market.

Europe is a lucrative market due to the development of the construction and automotive sectors. Furthermore, the increasing demand for cosmetic and personal hygiene products, together with the growing development of infrastructure is the main factor attributable to the growth of the local market.
