Arhat fruit is a Cucurbitaceae family herbaceous perennial vine native to Northern Thailand and China. This plant is grown for its fruit, which contains an extract that is roughly 300 times sweeter than sugar. It's a low-calorie sweetener that's also utilized in traditional Chinese medicine. The arhat fruit has a carbohydrate content of 25 to 38 percent, mostly glucose and fructose. Adding MoGro sides, a group of triterpene saponins boosts the sweetness even further. The vine grows to a length of 3 to 5 meters, creeping over other plants with tendrils that entangle around whatever they come into contact with. The leaves are 10–20 cm long and narrowly heart-shaped. The fruit is spherical, 5–7 cm in diameter, smooth, yellow-brownish or green-brownish in colour, with striations extending from the fruit stem end of the furrows, and a firm but thin skin coated in tiny hairs. The fruit's insides include an edible pulp that dries to produce a thin, light brown, brittle shell around 1 mm thick. The seeds are almost spherical and elongated.

Arhat fruit is collected as a spherical, green fruit that becomes brown after drying. It is rarely used in its fresh state since it is difficult to keep. As a result, the fruits are normally dried before usage and sold at Chinese herbal shops in this state. The fruits are carefully dried in ovens, which preserves them while also eliminating the majority of the undesirable smells.
